Msgr. Moses Maguire

Msgr. Maguire was born in Adamstown, County Wexford, Ireland on November 1, 1857. While he was a still a young boy his family moved to the United States and lived first in Chicago and then in Kansas. Bishop Fink ordained him in Leavenworth on April 8, 1890 following his studies at St. Mary’s College, St. Marys, Kansas; St. Vincent’s College, Cape Girardeau, MO; and St. Meinrad’s College, St. Meinard, IN. For one year he was an assistant at Assumption Parish in Topeka and then was moved to Fulton as pastor. In 1900 he was assigned to St. Mary’s Parish in Newton where he remained until his death on December 27, 1927 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Winfield. During his priesthood he was a Diocesan Consultor and Dean of the Wichita Deanery. Bishop Schwertner celebrated Msgr. Maguire’s Mass of Requiem and Father A. H. Walsh preached the eulogy at St. Mary’s Parish in Newton. He was buried at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Chapman, KS. Msgr. Moeder writes in his book, “In the death of Msgr. Maguire the diocese lost a pioneer priest and builder.” (History of the Diocese of Wichita, p. 130)
